Does agentic AI make our existing RPA robots obsolete?

No. Agentic AI does not automatically make existing RPA robots obsolete. Reliable robots can remain valuable for executing defined tasks, while AI agents can help interpret information and select actions within agreed boundaries.

RPA is well suited to repeatable activities with clear rules, such as transferring data between systems, retrieving records or entering validated information. AI agents become useful when a task involves variable requests, unstructured information or a choice between several possible next steps.

For example, an AI agent could interpret an incoming customer email and identify the information needed to handle it. An existing robot could retrieve that information from a legacy application. A workflow could then route the proposed response to an employee for approval.

The right decision depends on each automation:

  • Retain it when it performs reliably and continues to deliver value.
  • Extend it when AI can handle inputs or exceptions that currently require manual preparation.
  • Redesign it when the underlying process has changed or a simpler integration can replace fragile steps.
  • Retire it when the task or its business value has disappeared.

An AI agent still needs defined permissions, testing, monitoring and clear escalation rules. Greater autonomy should serve a specific business need.

RoboRana helps organisations assess their automation portfolio and combine RPA, AI agents, APIs and human involvement where each contributes most.
